Desley is a Mental Health Occupational Therapist with a Master of Social Science in Psychotherapy and Counselling. She has 20 years mental health experience working in Australia and London in a variety of settings including public and private health services for adolescents and adults with a range of difficulties.
Desley has worked extensively in the area of eating disorders and body image, as well as anxiety and depression, grief and loss, life transitions, relationship difficulties, low self esteem, post traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain. She is a skilled individual and group therapist who currently continues to work in public health with clients experiencing eating disorders, mood disorders and chronic pain. Desley has experience working with families and individuals, both adults and young people with complex mental health and physical difficulties. She has also previously worked in physical rehabilitation, which contributes to her understanding of the impacts of chronic illness on the individual and family.
Desley enjoys working with people of all ages and also provides support for parents, carers and partners of those experiencing mental health difficulties. She has an interest in working together with partners and families, parents and children to build stronger connections, emotional understanding and communication skills.
Desley provides a gentle, warm and supportive environment and focuses on developing trust and safety using a client centred approach to therapy. She uses a range of approaches including Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Schema Therapy, DBT for emotional regulation, and specialised treatments for a range of Eating Disorders. A creative approach to therapy is used and treatment is individualised to best suit a client or families’ needs. Her focus is on developing insight and understanding, emotional regulation, confidence, communication, anxiety management skills and motivation towards change.
